The smart tachograph G2V2 is the second version (Generation 2, Version 2) of the second-generation digital tachograph: the on-board device that automatically records a driver’s driving time, breaks and rest. It’s the standard required under the EU Mobility Package.
What sets it apart
Compared with earlier versions, the G2V2 adds automatic border-crossing recording via satellite positioning (GNSS), periodic position logging and enhanced anti-tampering features. Its purpose is to make the rules on driving and rest times and cabotage reliably verifiable.
When it’s mandatory
From 1 July 2026 the obligation extends to light commercial vehicles over 2.5 t and up to 3.5 t used in international transport or cabotage for hire and reward. For who is actually in scope, deadlines and installation, see the guide smart tachograph G2V2: hardware and driver card and the picture for vans in July 2026.
FAQ
Does the G2V2 replace fleet telematics?

Who must fit a G2V2 from 1 July 2026?
In short, vehicles over 2.5–3.5 t in international transport or cabotage for hire and reward. The details and exemptions are in the dedicated guide on tachographs for vans.
