General Safety Regulation (GSR) / ADAS

The GSR (General Safety Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2019/2144) is the European law that makes a set of ADAS mandatoryAdvanced Driver Assistance Systems — on new vehicles sold in Europe. ADAS are electronic systems that assist the driver to prevent or mitigate crashes (automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping, traffic-sign recognition, drowsiness alert, and more).

When they apply

The GSR phases the obligations in: from 7 July 2024 the first-phase ADAS are mandatory on all new registrations; further second-phase (GSR2) requirements take effect in 2026. The exact dates by category and model may vary with EU updates.

Why it matters for fleets

For anyone renewing a fleet, new vehicles already come equipped with these systems: equipment, costs and — potentially — safety and insurance premiums change. Many ADAS generate data useful for monitoring, integrable with fleet telematics. It’s a separate but complementary obligation to the smart tachograph G2V2.

FAQ

What’s the difference between GSR and ADAS?

The GSR is the EU regulation; ADAS are the safety systems the GSR makes mandatory. In short: the GSR is the law, ADAS are the required technology.

Are ADAS mandatory on commercial vehicles too?

Yes: the GSR also applies to vans, trucks and buses, with system sets and timelines specific to each vehicle category.
