eCall

eCall is the automatic emergency-call system that, after a serious crash, contacts the single European emergency number 112 and transmits the essential data to responders: GPS location, time, direction of travel and fuel type. It has been mandatory on newly type-approved cars in the EU since 2018.

How it works

A control unit linked to sensors (airbags, accelerometers) triggers the call automatically on impact, or manually via an SOS button. The system sends a Minimum Set of Data (MSD) and opens a voice channel with the control room. It relies on the on-board connectivity managed by the TCU.

eCall and privacy

eCall does not continuously track the vehicle: it stays dormant and activates only in an emergency, transmitting the minimum data needed for rescue. It’s therefore different from fleet telematics, which continuously monitors operations for other purposes.

FAQ

Does eCall always track the car’s location?

No. eCall activates only in a crash (or when the SOS button is pressed) and sends the location only at that moment, solely for rescue purposes.

Do all cars have eCall?

It’s mandatory on EU newly type-approved models since 2018; recent connected vehicles include it as standard. Older models may not have it.
