Last-mile logistics

Last-mile logistics is the final stage of delivery: the leg that takes goods from the last depot or hub to the end customer. It’s the most visible part for the recipient and, usually, the most expensive and complex in the whole supply chain.

Why it’s the most critical stage

The last mile concentrates numerous, closely spaced stops, time windows, urban traffic, low-emission/restricted zones and the risk of failed deliveries. It can account for a disproportionate share of total delivery cost. On the economic weight of the sector in Italy, see the last-mile market.

How it’s optimized

The main levers are route optimization, reliable arrival times (ETA), reducing failed deliveries, and efficient returns handling (reverse logistics). The signs that you need to act are described in 5 signs your last-mile logistics needs optimization.

FAQ

Why is the last mile so expensive?

Because of the high density of stops, time windows, urban traffic and failed deliveries. These push the cost per delivery far higher than in primary transport.

How do you reduce last-mile cost?

By optimizing routes, increasing first-attempt successful deliveries and improving the accuracy of the ETAs communicated to the customer.
