Fleet tracking is the real-time monitoring of the location and operational data of a fleet’s vehicles, using GPS and telematics. It lets a fleet manager know where every vehicle is, how it’s being used and at what fuel cost — all from a single platform.
How it works
The vehicle’s GPS position is collected and transmitted, together with other data (fuel use, mileage, driving behaviour), to a central system that shows it on a map and turns it into reports and alerts. The data source is telematics, which can be an aftermarket device or — on connected vehicles — the manufacturer’s cloud feed (hardware-free fleet tracking).
What it enables
Many operational functions are built on fleet tracking: route optimisation and verification, geofencing, fuel control, safety, maintenance and proof of delivery. It’s the core of Optivo’s fleet tracking platform, which works both with OBD devices and with no hardware at all.
FAQ
Are fleet tracking and GPS the same thing?
No. GPS only provides location. Fleet tracking uses GPS but adds the vehicle’s telematics data and manages it on a platform across the whole fleet.
Do you need to install a device for fleet tracking?
Not always. On compatible connected vehicles you can track without hardware, with the data coming from the manufacturer via Cloud OEM.
